Coming soon to a console near you….

So it’s that time of year again when there seems to be a decent game being released every week which means most of our wages will be getting pumped into the gaming industry! There are almost too many to write about but here are a few that have caught my attention that are due to be released within the next several months….

Batman: Arkham City
Release date: 18th October
The long-awaited sequel to Arkham Asylum is almost finally here and is the game that I have been really looking forward to all year! Arkham Asylum is in my top 3 games of all time on the Xbox so expecting big things as The Dark Knight now enters what seems to be the home of all the worlds worst criminals in Gotham City to again take on The Joker. It will be very interesting to see how big the city map will be compared to the first game but from what I have seen and read from it so far I don’t think we are going to be disappointed with their being plenty of secret locations to discover. Batman has new weapons and upgrades making him even more of a lean mean fighting machine and you can also control Catwomen who has different skills to Batman and far more agile making climbing, gliding even quicker than with Batman. The challenge modes have been kept with combat mode which has you fighting against various enemies using combos to build up your score and the Predator mode where you sneak around using the character’s abilities to take down enemies quietly. Also the game has been made compatible with stereoscopic 3D which will no doubt make the graphics even more incredible!!

Battlefield 3
Release date: 28th October
Having never really switched from Call Of Duty for my dossage of first person shooters I recently purchased Battlefield 2 due to seeing a few good reviews about it and I wasnt disappointed so there is no doubt that this game will be arriving through my letterbox in the next few weeks! In Battlefield 3, players step into the role of the élite U.S Marines where you experience action filled single player missions and multiplayer actions all around the globe including Paris, Tehran and New York. What has impressed in earlier Battlefields is that the campaign felt a lot more realistic than Call Of Duty partly due to anything around you being able to be blown to pieces and the enemy’s fire wasnt coming from in front of you all the time as there were times where you’re getting shot at from all directions. Also being able to use vehicles is added fun so the general feel of the environment around you in the game is pretty impressive. These are feature that they have built on in Battlefield 3 with the introduction of Frostbite 2 which is the technology that makes the animation, destruction, lighting, scale and audio even better which is designed to make the player feel immersed physically and emotionally into the environment around them. The vehicle warfare engine has also been upgraded with a fitting sonic boom as fighter jets headline an impressive lineup of land, see and air vehicles. These may seem “little” features to some people but I believe these are what give a game an edge over its rivals. Theres no doubt that it will always be in the shadow of COD but if you prefer the more tactical and realistic aspects of war then I believe you will prefer this game over COD.

Goldeneye 007 Reloaded
Release date: 11th November
This original Goldeneye game brings back plenty of funny memories playing of using remote mines especially on the multiplayer mode and most people agree it was one of the best games to come out in the 90s so I am surprised it has taken them this long to release another version on the Xbox and PS3. Last year the game did get released for the Wii and DS and was a success but didn’t seem to be the classic game that people remembered all those years ago. The original game was linear and this will be the case in this new version with the user working their way through various levels with a cinematic feeling continuing the typical Bond storyline and dialogue. I think this is a good thing as it wouldn’t be a Bond game without keeping the fundamental wit, gadgets and action that has made James Bond popular all these years.
Daniel Craig has taken over the role but you rarely see him as the developers have chosen to keep most of the player interactions as first person meaning you only catch a brief sight of Daniel before see everything from his point of view. Being on better hardware and first person will really bring out the massive explosions and cinematic action scenes that you couldn’t really appreciated too well on the other versions which will keep the player engaged into the game. The gameplay has kept the option of either shooting your way through the levels with the usual arsenal of weapons that Bond has or you can take more conserved approach and go stealthy taking enemies down silently with you being allowed to gather more weapons from dead enemies. Of course the developers have kept the classic silent handgun and various hacking devices to help get out of the usual impossible situations James Bond always seems to face! Now with the original multiplayer mode being so much fun I was interested to find out where they are going to go with it and sounds like they have done what was expected of offering a 16 player online component with the usual game modes such as deathmatch and team deathmatch as well as some other modes that havent been mentioned as yet aswell as the usual split screen option. While I don’t think this will be anything ground breaking or anywhere near the top games of 2011 I still think if you were a fan of the original game then this will certainly be worth a go.

Now the following game is a little different from some of the games above but I am going to mention it because I’m still a fan of the classic games I played in the early 90s and I still have and play a Sega Mega drive that I remember getting for Christmas 1990..so why would I turn down a chance to play them on a better console!?

Sonic Generations
Release date: 4th November
Yes that’s right its Sonic and I am not ashamed to say that I am going to buy this and have actually been really looking forward to playing this with better graphics and in HD!! You can play as either the Modern Sonic or Classic Sonic and the environment is set across the best parts of all the Sonic games and at the end of each level once your free Sonic’s friends you get to have them at your side unlocking more challenges. You also get to take on the most notorious characters from Sonic’s past by using the classic moves of “Sonic Spin attack” and the “Sonic Boost”. From what I have seen so far the game looks incredible with superb backgrounds and very colourful it will certainly make a change to playing all this serious and intense gaming that’s out at the moment…..nah who am I trying to kid, I just want to play Sonic like I did when I was a little brat in the early 90s!
