Hero Academy Review

Hero Academy is a turn based strategy game developed by the same team who created Age of Empires Online. It’s Robot Entertainments first mobile app which is now available for the iPhone and soon Android although not official announced unless you read there twitter feed………

In the game you’ll go head to head with either your friends or random players to see who can command a bunch of heroes to victory. The game ends once you’ve destroyed your enemy’s crystal or you run out of heroes. It’s turn based and each player gets 5 actions for every turn so you need to make every move count. During your turn you can upgrade your units, use items, add more heroes to the battlefield, move and attack. At the bottom of the screen you’ll find a mixture of items, power-ups, specials and heroes you can use during your turn. After every turn you’ll re-stock but be careful as you have a limited supply of items and units.

Hero Academy is not played in real-time, instead you take your turn and submit it to your enemy. Once they’ve taken their turn you’ll be notified and then it’s back to you. At first it didn’t feel right but with you being able to have up to 40 challenges at the same time you’ll always find a game that requires your attention. These 40 games can be with random opponents or your friends due to Facebook and Twitter being integrated, it’s a great way to show your friends who’s got the brains.

Hero Academy is all about tactics and strategy, want to add a hero to the board that will cost you a turn, or maybe upgrade their firepower? again it will cost you a turn. It reminds me a little of chess, a highly updated version but chess none the less.. At first glances it all looks so easy but after many defeats and taunts being thrown back at me it finally became clear you can’t just make any move because it will come back to haunt you.

Customisation has been kept simple, your able to change the colours of your team’s uniforms and change your avatar picture. It would have been nice to see more options like being able to pick what items/heroes you want in your load-out but this could affect the gameplay and not in a good way. Currently there are 2 different teams, The Council and The Dark Elves (Available as an in-app purchase). Each team have their own unique members and are able to do some interesting abilities. The Priest from the Dark Elves can raise a phantom from any dead body, The Warrior from the Council can knock an enemy back a few squares when attacking. With each team having their own playing style it keeps every battle fresh because you never know how the enemy will play.

Hero’s Academy has kept me coming back more times than I can remember, it’s just as intense as a real-time strategy and in my eyes harder. It really makes you think about every move you take because if you don’t take the chance your opponent will. I would have liked to seen more customisation where more risks could have been taken with using different amounts of heroes, items and upgrades but with 2 teams now available and a third coming soon maybe my idea is just found the corner……….
